COL: El campo necesita más que bordos

La gobernadora de Aguascalientes, Tere Jiménez, anunció recientemente la apertura de la convocatoria del Programa Estatal de Maquinaria Pesada para la Construcción y Rehabilitación de Bordos 2023. Según ella, este programa busca apoyar a los productores agropecuarios con infraestructura para la producción de alimentos y la captación de agua de lluvia.

Sin duda, se trata de una iniciativa loable que pretende mejorar las condiciones del campo y fomentar la actividad agrícola en el estado. Sin embargo, cabe preguntarse si es suficiente para enfrentar los retos y desafíos que plantea el cambio climático, la escasez de recursos, la competencia global y la pobreza rural.

Los bordos son estructuras que se construyen para almacenar el agua de lluvia y aprovecharla para el riego o el abrevadero de los animales. Son una solución tradicional que ha funcionado durante siglos en zonas áridas o semiáridas como Aguascalientes. Sin embargo, también tienen sus limitaciones y riesgos.

Por un lado, los bordos dependen de la cantidad y frecuencia de las lluvias, que son cada vez más irregulares e impredecibles debido al cambio climático. Por otro lado, los bordos pueden ser fuente de contaminación, erosión, evaporación y pérdida de agua si no se construyen y mantienen adecuadamente. Además, los bordos ocupan espacio que podría destinarse a otros fines productivos o ecológicos.

Por eso, creo que el campo necesita más que bordos para garantizar su sustentabilidad y rentabilidad. Se requieren políticas públicas integrales que promuevan la innovación tecnológica, la capacitación técnica, el acceso al crédito, el fomento a la asociatividad, la diversificación productiva, el valor agregado, la protección ambiental y la seguridad alimentaria.

No se trata de descalificar el programa de maquinaria pesada ni de restarle mérito a la gobernadora Jiménez. Se trata de reconocer que el campo es un sector estratégico para el desarrollo económico y social del estado y del país, y que merece una atención prioritaria y permanente por parte de las autoridades y la sociedad.

La agricultura es una actividad vital para la vida humana y para el equilibrio ecológico. No podemos dejarla al margen ni conformarnos con soluciones parciales o temporales. El campo necesita más que bordos. Necesita visión, inversión y compromiso.

Dams are structures that are built to store rainwater and use it for irrigation or watering animals. They are a traditional solution that has worked for centuries in arid or semi-arid areas such as Aguascalientes. However, they also have their limitations and risks.

On the one hand, dams depend on the amount and frequency of rainfall, which are increasingly irregular and unpredictable due to climate change. On the other hand, dams can be a source of pollution, erosion, evaporation and water loss if they are not built and maintained properly. In addition, dams occupy space that could be used for other productive or ecological purposes.

Therefore, I believe that the countryside needs more than dams to guarantee its sustainability and profitability. Comprehensive public policies are required that promote technological innovation, technical training, access to credit, promotion of associativity, productive diversification, added value, environmental protection and food security.

It is not about disqualifying the heavy machinery program or detracting from Governor Jiménez’s merit. It is about recognizing that the countryside is a strategic sector for the economic and social development of the state and the country, and that it deserves priority and permanent attention from the authorities and society.

Agriculture is a vital activity for human life and for ecological balance. We cannot leave it aside or settle for partial or temporary solutions. The countryside needs more than dams. It needs vision, investment and commitment.
